Reuse of carbon fibre remains in non-aeronautical applications

As part of our commitment to the environment, we contribute to various initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint derived from our industrial activity.
One of them was the participation in the C-Recycling project, launched by the Gaiker-IK4 technology centre to provide an economic and environmental solution to a scenario of increased waste associated with preimpregnated (prepreg) cuttings and carbon fibre composites, mainly from the aeronautical sector, which are usually not recovered or reused.

In Aciturri, we collaborate with the project by facilitating wastes of both materials used as the basis of the study, as well as suggesting some of the ideas for its reuse.

The recycling of these materials is often complex due to the diverse nature of the materials with which they are impregnated, as well as because of the difficulty of reshaping them, as they are made of thermosetting resin.

Thanks to this study, they were identified, among others, several products with high potential for their use in the automotive industry, mainly lightweight components with high mechanical performance and parts with new aesthetics of carbon finish.
